The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument preserves the site where, on June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn was fought between the the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army and the combined forces of the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne tribes. This battle, also known as Custer's Last Stand, ended in victory for the Native Americans and was a much-needed win for them during the course of the Great Sioux War of 1876-77. Today, the monument holds monuments to those who were killed on both sides of the field, as well as the Custer National Cemetery and a visitor center that offers museum-style exhibits, an educational video and ranger talks during the summer months. The site is located just off I-90 about 60 miles east of Billings and also manages the Reno-Benteen Battlefield situated just a few miles further east.
